Book Binding
Passion Project
I took on a personal project, to revamp my favourite books to blend of my love for reading and bookbinding. Inspired by the Penguin Clothbound Classics, I aimed to create unique covers that capture each story's essence. Using materials and colours aligned with each book's theme, I used my Cricut cutting machine and iron-on vinyl sheets to transfer the designs onto premium book cloth. It took me five evenings to finish - dedicating each day to specific tasks meant I could complete all four books at once.

Books: ‘Of Mice and Men’, ‘Sense and Sensibility’, ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ and ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.’
"The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas"
I chose a deep red velvet cover to reflect the intense emotions and real events in the novel. The shoe pattern serves as a poignant reminder of lives lost in Auschwitz. The black vinyl represents the darkness and tragedy in the novel, symbolising the harsh realities of war and loss.
"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland"
I used emerald green bookcloth, and designed a gold playing card pattern which mirrors the whimsical world of the book, as well as giving a nod to a popular part of the story. The vibrant purple endpapers capture the unpredictable and dreamlike nature of Wonderland, inviting readers into a world where the extraordinary is the norm.
"Sense and Sensibility"
The basil green cover mirrors character Elinor's practical and grounded nature. A white floral pattern on the front cover captures Marianne's traditional and romantic side, nodding to the time period's popular prints. Lime green endpapers complement and contrast with the basil green book cover.
"Of Mice and Men"
I went with a vintage cream bookcloth and headband, speckled with earthy tones, to mirror the harsh environment in the story, creating a nostalgic feel for the time period. The cover features an abstract pattern of animals from the book, using black vinyl to capture their dark and bleak nature. Dusty blue endpapers convey the melancholy of Lenny's dreams to own a ranch.
