Reinvent a Classic

Final Degree Project
Brief
Visually reimagine a classic novel to appeal to a different audience, such as children, teens, adults, collectors, or art enthusiasts. Consider factors like format, size, layout, and the interplay
of text and imagery. Produce a minimum of six double pages.
Outcome
For this project, I transformed “The Chronicles of Narnia” into a collector’s paper-cut book in concertina form. I used 300gsm watercolour card to capture intricate details and give the pages an antique snow-like texture. These pages represented key settings in the book. The paper-cut technique created a 3D snowflake pattern when the book was closed, and it also produced shadows suitable for a Lightbox or silhouette-style shadow show.
For the initial mockups and test versions, I meticulously hand-cut each piece with a scalpel. Eventually, I learned to use laser-cutting software to produce the final book - vectorising all designs for precision - to reduce the risk of damage from the sharp scalpel. I incorporated minimal typography to convey the story through summarising quotations. The book comprises 33 pages and measures 13cm by 13cm.
